Remember the cult movie, “Night of the Living Dead?”
Are you and most of your co-workers feeling like the “living dead” these days? So you somehow survived the traumas of the last few years, but perhaps your spirit is jaded, stagnant, and yearning for revival. Lots of people arrive at work each morning, take a deep sign, and then force themselves to physically move their body (or figuratively speaking, their hands) toward the work entrance while leaving their hearts and a significant portion of their heads behind. It’s called the “living dead” syndrome. Many of you can probably relate.
Now that the economy and marketplace are starting to come alive again, it’s time for you and the rest of the workforce to reawaken from near death. What worthwhile purposes could be achieved, what meaningful rewards could be earned, and what fun might you have if you and your colleagues didn’t leave a significant part of yourself behind each morning? What if you were really pursuing passionate purpose?
2nd Practice of Prosperity
Today is a new day. Just like the sunrise, it’s time to rise above the past and employ the 2nd Practice of Prosperity — use the Polarity Principle. Learn how to draw on the Polarity Principle to assimilate the disparate parts of self, the polarities, into wholeness and balance in life. In moving beyond an “either/or” approach to an “and” mode, greater power, potential, and stability are released and your spirit is awakened.
Many of the 80 people from all walks of life that participated in my study on “Pursuit of Passionate Purpose,” both male and female, perceive a tension between various parts of themselves. It is real. Both men and women perceived this tension, although they might explain it differently. Consider this wisdom from an interview with Martha Arnett, great grandmother and retired university secretary:
“You can not live without recognizing opposites. You can’t have evil without good. You wouldn’t know one without the other. Opposites create balance.”
A Practical Pointer
Find your rhythm switch. By recognizing and honoring rhythms, we encourage it and a balance of the polarities naturally emerges. My infant daughter had a cuddly brown bear with a magic switch. When turned on, the sounds of a human heartbeat could be heard. This magic bear brought a simple, soothing rhythmical sound to all who caressed it. Ponder on what is your magic switch to turn on rhythm and balance of polarities. Is it the sound of a clock ticking, slow chewing, a deep breath, or something else?
Good News
Do you have a part-time passion? Well one of mine, being a co-advisor for the 6-9th grader video project at my church, has paid off with some real rewards in helping kids learn something new. Let me boast about the kids for a minute. Congratulations to the youth team who created the 20-minute video “Unitarian Universalism and You” which won a “Best of Boulder” media award in the student category from the local Community Access TV network. Many thanks to all who helped along the way, especially Ken Fong, the volunteer video editor. If you live in Boulder and have cable, check out Ch 54 which will be broadcasting the awards ceremony and this video over the next few weeks. Visit www.commtv.org for more information.
